Optimisation of offshore electrical networks for the CorPower wave energy arrays – power system modelling and analysis

CorPower Ocean AB is designing their full-scale Wave Energy Converter (WEC) which is to be deployed for extended sea trials in 2020-21.  Currently the company is focusing on supporting this device during testing, specifying upgrades to this system to improve energy output during future testing, and specifying the architecture and initial design of a full-scale wave energy array. 

The CorPower WEC is a 300 kW device, and this thesis will initially concern an early-commercial deployment of 10 MW multiple wave energy converters.  This thesis will be reliant on power system dynamic modelling of highly variable generation sets.  Specific topics of importance include:

  • Build on existing knowledge and power system models to model a 10 MW array based on at least 2 different layouts
  • Perform following analysis: load flow, fault, network efficiency, voltage profile and power quality; and evaluate grid compliance against local site regulations
  • Perform sensitivity analysis on certain component ratings for increased efficiency and/or power quality
  • Analysis of such a 10 MW deployment in different sites, to ensure that the chosen architecture can be used throughout typical variations of transmission length, deployment depth, transmission voltage & grid strengths
  • Use learnings to specify architecture for a larger 300 MW farm and possibly model the same
  • If time permits, investigate and recommend network combinations in co-located wind-wave arrays based on above learnings


You will work closely with the Electrical team throughout the project and receive inputs from the Systems & Analysis team for appropriate data. The ideal candidate will have prior knowledge and experience in a majority of the following topics.

  • Modelling of power systems, preferably offshore wind farms or distributed generation
  • Power system protection and application in distributed generation and wind farms
  • Software skills: PowerFactory, ETAP or similar

The candidate is expected to have prior experience or most importantly, can demonstrate an interest in some of the following topics:

  • European electrical distribution regulations and design codes, relating to offshore networks and distributed generation
  • Offshore renewable energy – wave, tidal, wind
  • Transformer, design and protection
  • Umbilical cable & marine connector
  • Optimising power systems for efficiency and cost.
